Warhammer Age of Sigmar Orruk Warclans Maw-grunta Gouger

review by Sergio Almonte

Cry havoc, and let slip the hogs of war!

Hello wrekkaz and brutes, this is Tuskboss Sergio looking at the Maw-grunta Gouger kit from Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. This multipart kit is a beauty, and in this review I hope to look over the model and its build options, the painting opportunities of the kit and a peek at the rules of this hog-wild beast! Enough rolling around in the mud, let us begin!

Contents

The Maw-grunta box builds one of the following….

  • Tuskboss on Maw-grunta
  • Maw-grunta with Hakkin’ Krew
  • Maw-grunta Gouger

This box has a large number of options, as you can add or leave off several components to build the different units included, such as the ‘Hakkin’ Krew” hanging off the side or the additional armor plating on the snout and chin of the Maw-grunta. In regards to building the model, the legs and body of the Maw-grunta were relatively simple to construct and attach. I had a slight difficulty aligning the face and tongue of the grunta, as these parts freefloat on top of the core body. However, the rest of the build was delightful, especially how flush the hanging bone-stirrups that the crew stand on are. The model is stable on the base with two strong connection points, and is easy to paint as all of the fur and armor is accessible without subassemblies.

Painting

Offering a large palette of interesting textures and shapes, the Maw-grunta will look great in any bold color scheme, as the hammered metal sheets are wide and flat enough to be aged through wear and tear (scratches, cuts, dirt and grime) but also textured enough to promote drybrushing the edges for simplicity. The matted and raised fur is an easy base for browns, greys and blacks that will frame the brighter colors atop the armor plates easily. The orruks themselves are fairly simple, heavily armored and wielding oversized weapons that can be highlighted with bright silvers or bronzes on the cutting edges. This kit is a treat to paint, offering many palette options that complement one another without feeling excessively complex.

Rules

The Maw-grunta wants to be doing three things. Charging, charging, charging! Whenever this unit charges or runs, it gains a momentum point it can then cash into huge amounts of damage whenever it slams home. This rule applies to all versions of the Maw-grunta, but there are a few differences between the different versions. The basic grunta has only the tusks and choppa of the mounted orruk to attack with, while a hakkin’ krew adds extra attacks into the mix. The Tuskboss is a hero version of the unit, which can lead other pigs into battle and dominate the battlefield with artifacts and heroic traits. All in all, the Maw-grunta is a whole lot of pork to cut through, putting your enemies on the back foot whenever it attacks.

Conclusion

The Maw-grunta is a fantastic hobbying project and a great start to any Ironjawz collection. Assembly, painting and playing are all a breeze with this huge hog, and it’ll be a delight to see more of them scouring the battlefields of the mortal realms clean!

The Maw-grunta is available now on our webstore.
