Avatar Legends is a roleplaying game set in the universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, and the greater Avatar universe including books and comics. Not the James Cameron movies. Avatar Legends is published by Magpie Games, the same folks responsible for Root: The Roleplaying Game, Bluebeard’s Bride, Masks: A New Generation, and more.

The starter set includes: a quickstart rules booklet, an introductory adventure booklet with two adventures (one for the Aang era and one for the Korra era), 10 six-sided dice featuring Tui and La, combat action cards, 10 pre-generated character sheets, 6 rules reference sheets, a full-color map of the Four Nations, and a code to unlock a digital version of the Avatar Legends Starter Set.

To start, the quickstart rules booklet is a helpful tool to jump right into the world of Avatar Legends. The rules you need to get started are laid out in a condensed format, making it easy to pick up this starter set and play the game. Each pre-generated character sheet is fully illustrated with character art and easily tells the user about the character they are picking up to play as. The combat action cards are a great way to help guide what players wish to do during combat exchanges. The adventure booklet can help any game master get their footing in the world of Avatar Legends, whether they want to guide the players through the Aang era or the Korra era.

In Avatar Legends, players only use six-sided dice when they are called upon to make a roll. The game runs on the Powered by the Apocalypse engine, which usually means you’re only rolling 2 D6 per roll. You add (or subtract) whichever stat is being used for that roll. For Avatar Legends, those stats are: Creativity, Focus, Harmony, and Passion. The stats are mostly narrative mechanics rather than actual abilities. Avatar Legends doesn’t care about how strong your character is - it cares about how you show your strength in moments of uncertainty. Do you lift a car using your Passion to save a loved one trapped beneath it? Do you use your Creativity to come up with a plan on how to lift an injured person who fell down a well?

Overall, the starter set is really a great way to get started. Having opened other RPG starter sets, this is definitely one of the better ones for immersing players and game masters into the universe.
