Hive Pocket

Hive Pocket is a two-player strategy game that plays similar to a quick form of chess, and also is small enough to fit in your pocket. The goal is to have your opponent’s Queen Bee completely surrounded with pieces. This game is very simple and travel friendly, no board or set up required. 

Each player starts with a set of insect tiles, and each insect type moves differently. The Queen Bee can move one space at a time, the Beetle can climb on top of other pieces and pin them in place, the Grasshopper jumps in a straight line over other tiles, the Ant can move anywhere around the outside of the hive, and the Spider moves three spaces along the hive each turn. On your turn you can either place a new piece or move one you’ve already played, but pieces must always connect to form one hive and can never break the hive apart when moving which adds a level of strategy of when to add to the hive or move your current pieces. 

The pocket edition comes with the Mosquito and Ladybug expansions included. The Mosquito takes on the movement style of any piece it’s currently touching. The Ladybug moves three spaces, however the first two spaces must be on top of the hive and the last space must come down off of the hive. These are fun additions from the original Hive game that keeps every game fresh

If you want to add another twist, the Pillbug expansion continues to add to the fun. The Pillbug tile moves one space at a time, however it has a special ability that allows it to move an adjacent tile two spaces, one on top of itself and the down to an empty space adjacent to itself. This adds a fun twist to make for more offensive or defensive strategy to the original game. 

Hive Pocket is only a two-player game, so if you’re looking for something to bring to game night with a group, this unfortunately isn’t it. If you want something for when you’re traveling, at a café, or just want something fast and competitive to play at home it’s very recommended.
