Flip 7

review by K

“The greatest card game of all time,” as stated on the box of Flip 7. But is it the greatest card game ever? In this essay, I will -

Just kidding. Flip 7 is pretty dang fun. In Flip 7, players take turns flipping cards. Each card has a number on it, or some sort of special ability. Players can choose to pass on drawing a card and keeping the points in front of them, adding the numbers they’ve pulled from the deck. If a player risks it and “busts” (which is getting 2 of the same number), then they lose all points they’ve accumulated during that round!

The numbers on the cards are in frequency with the matching number. Meaning, there are exactly 2 cards with the number 2, 5 with 5, 11 with 11, and so on and so forth. The numbers range from 1-12, higher numbers mean more points, but also a bigger chance of getting a duplicate number and losing all your points!

A round ends either when one player is able to flip 7 number cards, if there’s only one player remaining after the other players are out for the round, or if the remaining players no longer wish to draw cards and keep the points in front of them. Rounds continue, without resetting the draw deck, until a player reaches 200 points. The other cards that players can flip either have special actions or grant bonus points to a player’s score. Bonus points have a plus sign in front of a number (ie +2, +10, etc.) and do not count as actual number cards. The other action cards say things like “Flip Three” or “Freeze,” which you can pass onto another player. The “Freeze” card automatically stops a player from continuing to draw cards during the round. The “Flip Three” card forces a player (can be yourself) to flip 3 cards in a row from the deck. This strategy could potentially get a player a big boost or cause them to bust rapidly! The other action card is “Second Chance,” where a player is granted another opportunity to flip a card if they flip a duplicate card during their turn.

Flip 7 is a fast-paced, push your luck style card game. It’s easy to learn and play, and should be a fun addition to any casual board game night, as a quick game before going out, or as the main course for your evening. Flip 7 has definitely become one of my top card games!
