The Tea Dragon Society Card Game

review by Tessa

The Tea Dragon Society is not only an adorable game of dragons who just want to have a tea party but is also a casually strategic deck building game. The gameplay is simple with two possible actions, either pulling cards from your deck to save “growth” or currency for buying additional cards for your deck, or buying additional cards. Buying cards just means you are discarding cards for now, but they will pop back up as you play the game and reshuffle your deck. When playing The Tea Dragon Society, you get your choice of tea dragon which are all adorably named after our favorite soothing teas. Will you choose sleepy chamomile, or hungry ginseng? Either will leave you with a fun play experience! While all starting decks have some variation, they won’t drastically change your strategies and gameplay, making it easy to adjust to each deck. The Tea Dragon Society is for players 10 and up, but younger players who can read shouldn’t have a problem. There is even a comic to help you get started playing! The game is for two to four players and takes 30 to 60 minutes to play. There is smooth scaling between player counts, with more or less cards being added depending on player count. Still, longer games will occur with more players.

The Tea Dragon Society is perfect for a calmer night in with a group of friends. It is easy to learn and easier to teach. There are interesting strategies that will emerge on your second or third playthrough, while not being so complex that it is hard to understand. The basic premise is to enhance your deck to more easily acquire cards worth points, but there are different methods to do this. Playing a few times will help you learn how you want to play The Tea Dragon Society, but playing it many times will equip you with the knowledge of how to play any strategy given the circumstances!
