Faster, Purple Worm! Everybody Dies Vol. 1
review by Apollo
Beadle and Grimm’s Faster, Purple Worm! Everybody Dies is a roleplaying system that has its basis in Dungeons & Dragons rules and character creation. The book includes fifteen different one-shots that can technically be extended to campaigns with in-book modifications. Each one-shot contains a different setting and story that dictates what people can and will create for characters.
The basis of the game is that the party will make level one characters that get sent on quests where they will be facing off against Big Bads from the Dungeons & Dragons universe. In the process of fighting these Big Bads, the whole party will perish in varying ways. BGFPWED is a great system for new dm’s and players alike. I went into this as someone who has played but never dm’ed before and everyone commented that they enjoyed the session. I was also able to have a new player that enjoyed the process of making the character as well as the one-shot. It’s helpful to desensitize them from the beginning for a TPK!
The components needed for this system include the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual. A handful of the campaigns don’t require battle maps though it is recommended to get one of the larger maps (check the size of the map) and wet erase markers for use for all the campaigns. The map system is a standard square base and there will be detailed illustrations that you can copy from the book if wanted. When making a character for these sessions players are encouraged to create characters that they care about, create types/blends of classes that they wouldn’t normally use in a long campaign, and commit to the bit so as to make the session as interesting and fun as possible for everyone. The projected amount of time needed for the full session is 1-2 hours but, if the DM or any players are new, I would recommend scheduling it for 3-4 hours instead.
Each one-shot is incredibly captivating and gives enough structure with information for new DMs while still leaving room for improv from both sides.
