LONGSWORD

review by Kaleb

You are a Knight. You go out on quests to honor your Queen, to save your people, to become a legend. You quest because you are a Knight.

LONGSWORD is a role-playing game about being a Knight, and all of the trials and tribulations that come along with the role. There’s a simple D100 system with each Knight consisting of four attributes called Virtues. These Virtues are Courage, Clever, Chivalry, and Faith. Each Virtue starts at 40+2D10. In this D100 system, you want to roll a number below your Virtue stat for success, so having a higher Virtue is advantageous.

When creating your Knight, after you’ve rolled up your Virtues, you can also roll for a Background, Weapon, Oath, and Knightly Title. You weren’t always a Knight. Your Background is who you were prior to knighthood - were you a witch, a servant, a poet? Once your Background is decided (either by random chance or by choice), add +5 to a Virtue of your choice that you feel is closely related to your Background. A Knight is nothing without their trusted Weapon. You can choose or roll for a signature Weapon - will you wield a spear, longbow, or a flail? Once you have your Weapon, you may add +5 to a Virtue associated with your Weapon.

Each Knight makes this Oath when they are sworn into knighthood: I swear absolute love and loyalty to my Queen and henceforth is Her weapon, wisdom, and will. While creating your Knight, you may also roll for a new Oath, come up with one on your own, or choose one from the Oaths Table. Breaking one’s Oath has serious consequences…

Now that you have your Background, Weapon, and Oath, it’s time for your Knightly Title. You may come up with your own, choose from the Titles Table, or roll for random selection. You could be Phillip the Kind, Maverick the Relentless, or Georgia of the River. Whilst you’ve made your character selections, you fill out your Knight’s Repertoire in your character sheet - why is this Weapon significant? What happened to have earned your Knightly Title? Your Repertoire is your notoriety, your infamy, your history.

Throughout LONGSWORD, the Game Master’s job is to create interesting and challenging dilemmas that will make you question your choices. They will also create consequences for your actions and reactions. Your Knight will be tested, and you will need to overcome great feats of combat prowess, cunning smooth talk, or rattled faith.

All-in-all, LONGSWORD is a rules-lite game about being a Knight, going on quests, and being tested. LONGSWORD is based on Arthurian and Mahabharatan tales. Defend your kingdom, fight monsters, defy dark magic, become a legend.
