Perils & Princesses
review by Kaleb
Perils & Princesses is a fairy tale adventure role-playing game that is easy to pick up and learn! The players each play as princesses (gender neutral) embarking on an adventure who have received magical gifts from their Fairy Godmothers. These Gifts are considered the player’s classes. Some of the Gifts include Enchanting Voice, Elemental Connection, and Healing Touch - most things often associated with princesses in fairy tales. Each player has 3 stats which are called Virtues in this game: Resolve, Grace, and Wits.
When a player needs to roll a Virtue Test, they roll a D20. To succeed on their Test, they must roll the number matching or less than the number listed by the appropriate stat. In addition to a character’s Virtues, each character’s Gift has Innate Abilities and Special Abilities. Innate Abilities don’t require rolls to see how powerful the magic is, but Special Abilities do. For example: The Healing Touch Gift has an Innate Ability called “Lifeblood,” which makes your Princess immune to illness, infection, and poison. However, your Princess is extra tasty to monsters, vampires, and anything carnivorous. When invoking a Special Ability, players must roll Gift Dice to determine the success threshold of the magic. The player chooses how many Gift Dice to roll, but it is a high risk/high reward situation.
Creating your Princess is a fun process, and there are tables where you can roll dice to determine the respective result on the table for weapons, traits, etc.; the options are endless!
The book is very easy to read and understand, and makes Perils & Princesses a great game for any role-playing novice. The art of the book is also really fun and cute, with all of the art looking like pencil sketches with a distinct pink, black, and white color scheme throughout the book. There are also follow up adventure supplements for Perils & Princesses available called Sweet Revenge and The Night Market (coming soon to physical).
Perils & Princesses is available now from our webstore.
